About the RSE

The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) is Scotland’s National Academy. Through the expertise of our Fellowship and the work of our staff, we bring together knowledge, ideas, and people to help address the most important issues facing Scotland and the wider world.

Our Fellowship of over 1,800 individuals spans academia, business, public service, the arts, and civil society. Alongside this, the RSE delivers a wide-ranging programme of research support, policy advice, public engagement, and international collaboration.

We are a collaborative, purpose-driven organisation with a strong commitment to supporting our people and promoting a positive and inclusive working culture.

Our small team is about to become a wee bit bigger. You may spot several roles advertised across the RSE this summer. These opportunities reflect investment in our people and future priorities as we grow our ambition to make knowledge useful.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced data and insights professional to strengthen the data capability of our growing team. In this role, you will lead data analysis and insight generation across the organisation, helping to ensure decisions are evidence-based.

This is a new position created as part of the RSE’s data and insight strategy. You will help shape how the strategy is delivered, combining hands-on work – such as building Power BI dashboards and producing impact reports – with contributing to strategic discussions.

As Senior Data and Insight Officer, you will work closely with colleagues across the organisation, including the Senior Leadership team, providing trusted advice and support. You will need to be confident working independently, able to manage competing priorities, and comfortable balancing day-to-day delivery with longer-term planning and improvement.

About you

You will bring:

  • Experience working with complex data from multiple sources
  • Strong skills in data cleaning and preparation to ensure accuracy
  • Confidence when using databases and CRM systems for data management
  • Advanced Excel skills for efficient analysis
  • Experience creating dashboards and reports (e.g. Power BI)
  • Ability to turn complex data into simple, actionable insights
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • An ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Great communication and presentation skills
  • Good understanding of data protection, GDPR, and handling sensitive data

This role would suit someone who enjoys variety, values autonomy and is looking for an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution within a collaborative and purpose-led organisation.
